Netball Courts Project

A Community Effort in Action

After three years of dedication and persistence, the Hauraki Plains Community Hub is excited to see the revitalisation of the netball courts finally underway. This journey has been filled with challenges, collaboration, and a shared vision of providing high-quality facilities for our community.

The Journey So Far

The project began in 2020, sparked by concerns about ponding issues and deteriorating conditions on the courts. Initially, we received three estimates for the works to resurface all six courts, averaging about $200,000. Armed with this information, we approached funders and successfully secured $270,000 in funding—a huge win! However, after surveyors assessed the grounds, the project was re-quoted at $560,000, far exceeding our budget.

This significant shortfall led to an ongoing journey of problem-solving and perseverance. Meetings with the Hauraki District Council Mayor and Chief Executive, presentations to Councillors, and countless discussions between engineers and contractors helped us find a path forward. In February 2024, a breakthrough occurred when the Hauraki District Council came on board, recognizing the community’s dedication to raising funds. With the council’s support and the appointment of a project manager, the project scope was reimagined. It was determined we could re-level and asphalt the back four courts—the most problematic—while retaining the front two, staying within budget.

Throughout this process, the support from our funders, including Lottery Community Facilities, Grassroots Trust, Trust Waikato, Bobby Foundation, has been unwavering. Despite delays and challenges, their patience and understanding have been vital to keeping this project alive.

Despite delays, funding pressures, and complex engineering discussions, we secured the necessary approvals and finalized the plans by late 2024. Thanks to collaboration between council engineers, Babbage consultant engineers and MS Civil, the project has been designed to address the unique soil conditions and minimise future subsidence risks.

What’s Next?

The upgrade includes adding tennis and pickleball lines to expand the courts’ versatility. These changes will allow the community to enjoy a range of sports. Once completed, the courts will serve as a hub for activity, connection, and community pride.

Acknowledging Our Supporters

This project would not have been possible without the patience and generosity of our incredible funders: Lottery Community Facilities, Grassroots Trust, Trust Waikato, Bobby Foundation, and the support of the Hauraki District Council. Their contributions and understanding during this lengthy process have been instrumental in making this dream a reality.

Celebrating Progress

While it has been a long and challenging journey, we are thrilled to be nearing the finish line. The upgraded courts will not only support the upcoming netball season but will also create lasting opportunities for sports and recreation in the Hauraki Plains community.
