With more than 100 years of cricketing history behind them, Kaihere Cricket Club continues to be one of the most dedicated and community-minded clubs on the Hauraki Plains.
Building Their Own Home at Hugh Hayward Domain
After celebrating their centenary in 2020, the club relocated to the Hugh Hayward Domain, where members self-funded and built their own grass wicket and training nets. It’s now a shared space for the community, maintained by club members who take care of mowing the field to preparing the pitch each week.
Kaihere Cricket is also home to the only senior team in the Thames Valley still playing in the Saturday competition, showing the dedication to local tradition and commitment to the sport and its volunteers.
Strengthening Community Connections Through HPCH
As regular users of the Domain, Kaihere Cricket joined the Hauraki Plains Community Hub to stay connected with other local clubs and ensure their voice is represented in decisions about shared spaces. Being part of the Hub helps the club strengthen links with neighbouring organisations and work together to improve community facilities. We value the strength in their voice.
A Fresh Era for Youth Cricket
The Hauraki Plains Youth Cricket programme, which has been running for over a decade, is being refreshed by a new group of parents who are passionate about getting tamariki involved. The new Hauraki Smash & Play Cricket programme starts on Friday 14th November at the Ngatea Domain and will run every second Friday evening for children in Years 2 to 6. It’s all about confidence, participation, and fun, with short skill sessions and friendly mini games. To encourage their participation and to keep practicing between sessions, each player takes home their own bat and ball.
It’s exciting to see a small, long-standing club like Kaihere Cricket continue to grow and evolve. Between their senior competition, dedicated volunteers, and the fresh energy of the youth programme, the future of cricket on the Plains is looking bright.
