We had the chance to hear from Matt Vendt, Club President, at our recent Members’ Meeting, and we were inspired to hear more about what’s happening at Hauraki Plains Football Club, on and off the field.

Wolves Stay Top Four and Celebrate New Milestones

The Mighty Wolves have wrapped up another big season, and the energy around the club is stronger than ever. This year, the Wolves remained in the top four of their league, continuing the success of their debut season in 2024. The club also fielded its first all-girls under-10 team – a milestone moment for the club and a great sign of growth in the local game.

Beyond the Game: How the Wolves Are Growing Their Off-Field Influence

What’s been great to watch this year is the growth of the club’s off-field impact. From the Plains to the Pitch, the club’s grassroots football podcast, was launched with a basic idea and has continued to build momentum and reach new listeners across the country – and even globally. Each week, hosts Matt, Jack, and Alex bring to life the stories, characters, and humour that make community sport so special. From the early-morning fog on the Hugh Hayward Domain to the laughter and banter that carries through every game, the podcast captures the authentic heart of football on the Plains. Matt tells us, that amongst the diehard football references and intel, it’s focus is also on wellbeing – shining a light on the mental health of players, coaches, and volunteers, and reminding listeners that community sport is as much about connection and care as it is about competition. It’s become a source of pride for the club and a window into what grassroots sport really looks like when it’s done with passion and purpose. Plus it looks super polished, like these guys have been doing it as their profession for years.

The club’s online community has also gone from strength to strength. Their Facebook and Instagram pages are a hub of activity – full of match recaps, club news, highlights from the podcast, and moments of humour that reflect the camaraderie of the team. This year, Hauraki Plains Football Club was named a finalist in the Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Awards for Social Media Presence – an impressive recognition of how well they connect with both players and supporters online. Their consistency, storytelling, and sense of fun have built a loyal following, and an impressive on brand campaign make them strong contenders to bring home that award next season.

How the Club Supports Youth Football

This Term 4, Hauraki Plains FC is running a Federation Development Programme for boys and girls aged 10 to 14 – a fantastic opportunity for young players to build skills, confidence, and connection in a supportive environment. Every Friday from 4 pm at the Hugh Hayward Domain, the club continues to invest in the next generation of footballers. We know that this kind of set up is great for kids who want a bit more, without a huge commitment at this time of year.

We love seeing local clubs like this one leading the way both on and off the field – blending community, creativity, and genuine passion for the game.
